I love explaining the great benefits of vaginal rejuvenation and labiaplasty to many of my patients who otherwise wouldn’t have known about these sexual health solutions. Consequently, I am often asked whether procedures can be performed in combination, as most women’s sexual health is not one-dimensional. They may have several different concerns that ultimately conspire to reduce sexual pleasure and self-esteem. To that end, some of my patients wonder if vaginal rejuvenation can be performed if they’ve had labiaplasty, and the answer is absolutely yes; this is not only possible but a great idea whether you’ve had a surgical or non-surgical labiaplasty.
When Do My Patients Need a Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical or non-surgical treatment to reduce the size or appearance of the labia minora, the inner lips of the vulva. Due to gravity, age, childbirth, and genetics, these structures are more likely to protrude, causing some to have a less-than-ideal aesthetic, which they may want to address.
A surgical labiaplasty does this by cutting away parts of the labial tissue to reduce the visibility of these ladies in the menorah and give patients a nice, symmetric look. Labiaplasty is also very helpful in treating discomfort or problematic urination due to elongated labia. Surgical labiaplasty can be performed using the wedge method, often used for more extensive excisions and asymmetric labia. The trim method is used when there is some symmetry to the labia minora; thus, both labia will be trimmed to
Non-surgical labiaplasty is ideal for patients with smaller protrusions of the labia minora. During our consultation, we will discuss precisely what this means and which procedure is best.
Vaginal Rejuvenation
Vaginal rejuvenation, on the other hand, targets the vaginal canal. Unlike labiaplasty, we are not looking to reduce the vaginal tissue but rather enhance it to increase collagen and elastin production, creating tightness and reducing the symptoms of perimenopause menopause, often including vaginal dryness and painful sex. Vaginal rejuvenation is an umbrella term that covers a host of individually effective procedures. From micro-needling to RF (radio frequency) therapy to hormonal creams and even electrical stimulation, vaginal rejuvenation technology has improved to a degree where we have a plethora of options customized to a patient’s needs.
Considerations of vaginal rejuvenation after a labiaplasty.
Ultimately, the biggest concern about performing vaginal rejuvenation therapies after a labiaplasty revolves around recovery. Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure, and the labial tissue requires some time to recover before other procedures in the area are performed. As such, we don’t suggest that patients begin a vaginal rejuvenation treatment protocol for several weeks after their labiaplasty. However, if patients have undergone a non-surgical labiaplasty, the recovery time is much shorter, and most patients can start a vaginal rejuvenation regimen sooner.
The Bottom Line
The best next step is to have an open and candid conversation with a trusted medical professional and seek the care of a cosmetic gynecologist. This will help you understand more about your condition and develop an appropriate treatment protocol to achieve your goals safely, effectively, and with as little downtime as possible.
