Painful Sex – Why It Happens & How We Treat It

Around the age of 40 (on average) is when women typically start to notice changes with the vagina and with sex. What is happening is that our estrogen levels are starting to decline.

With lowered estrogen levels come vaginal wall thinning and decreased production of vaginal lubrication, which can lead to vaginal dryness and painful sex.

Vaginal dryness has been described to me several different ways:

  • It feels like sandpaper in my vagina.
  • It burns when I pee.
  • It burns with sex.
  • I bleed with sex.
  • I feel pressure in my vagina.
  • I feel like my insides are falling out.

And lack of vaginal estrogen can also lead to unpleasant conditions like:

  • Recurrent urinary tract infections.
  • Overactive bladder.
  • Urinary leakage.
  • Painful Sex.

Thankfully, there are ways to treat these unpleasant changes.

In my practice, I discuss the pros and cons of vaginal estrogen replacement with my patients.

I also offer vaginal rejuvenation treatments which can reverse the hands of time:

  • Forma V
  • Morpheus 8v

These two treatments address the superficial as well as deep tissues of the vagina with restorative radiofrequency energy and microneedling. The heat produced by this treatment starts the process of new collagen and elastin production and stimulates rejuvenating growth factor release which ultimately leads to a healthier, more lubricated vaginal lining. There is also the added benefit of vaginal tightening for those who feel that “things aren’t as tight as they used to be.”

I like to combine these therapies with either restorative PRF (Platelet-rich-fibrin) or Exosome (stem cell and growth factor cytokines) application for an enhanced outcome.
