Insurance typically does not cover labiaplasty and other vulvar procedures perceived as purely cosmetic. To be sure, many women choose to have a labiaplasty to improve the look of the vulva – for purely cosmetic reasons. This can be because of their perceptions or because a partner has broached the subject, for better or worse. However, in our practice, the most common complaint surrounding enlarged or elongated labia minora revolves around pain and discomfort. Most women with enlarged labia have difficulty wearing certain clothes, especially bathing suits or leggings, or experience chafing and irritation as they rub against clothing during vigorous activity – sports most commonly.
As such, we do consider many cases of labial hypertrophy or large labia as a genuine medical concern.
Will Insurance Cover My Labiaplasty?
Unfortunately, most labiaplasties are not covered by insurance because they are considered cosmetic by the insurance company.
The crux of the problem revolves around treating labiaplasty as a cosmetic versus reconstructive procedure. Elsewhere on our website, you will read that there are no objectively normal vulvar shapes or labial characteristics. Some patients have naturally smaller labia, while others have larger ones. We’ve also discussed how a labiaplasty should not be chosen solely based on objective measurement of the labia. Some patients with smaller labia may have concerns, just as other patients with larger labia may have no problems at all.
When insurance companies evaluate medical necessity, they rarely consider one’s comfort and instead expect there to be a provable medical condition. In other words, the inability to wear a tight dress, play certain sports because of the chafing, or wear a bathing suit is often insufficient for insurance companies to approve coverage. To make such a blanket coverage decision is not right, but it is a reality.
